Birth certificate unveiled

We are excited to announce that today would have been British painter John Doman Turner’s official birthday. In fact he would have been 146 today, had he still been alive!

Through our research we were able to track down and obtain a copy of Doman Turner’s birth certificate through the General Register Office, which has been incredibly valuable towards our research. A section taken from John Doman Turner’s birth certificate.

The certificate states that the former Camden Town Group artist was born on the 25th October 1871. His mother was Sarah Ann Turner (formally Staff) and his father was Edmund Turner. At the time of the birth, they all lived together with John’s older brother Edmund at 4 Harbour Road, Cold Harbour Lane, Brixton in London.

Over the years, Doman Turner’s birth date has been confused as census information from the early 1900’s suggested that the artist was originally born in 1873. It should also be noted that no existing publication, exhibition or website has been able to identify this specific birth date. So we will hopefully be able to ensure moving forwards that this information is corrected.
